UNIT 10

 UNIT 10:

The Pros and Cons of Higher Education.

After researching the pros and cons of HE there are many advantages and disadvantages that I had come across. Many people go into HE to develop more in their skills and knowledge for their upcoming career and success in future employments.

One of the advantages of going into HE is the ability to develop your skills after getting a diploma in college and going further to get a degree in your chosen course for your future employment. HE is very useful way to grow your knowledge in the area aspire to be in the future. HE also gives you an opportunity to research more about your chosen area of work and also gives work experience/placement to get use to your working environment, also you develop other useful skills such as team work and leadership skills that can make employability more easier for you when its time for you to look for work, you would stand out from the other candidates applying for jobs because you have developed more useful skills on your course that you developed. Careers such as law, engineering, medicine/nursing and accountancy and marketing requires a degree from university, otherwise it will be really hard for you to get into that field of work./ profession.

In addition another benefit to HE is gaining connections to help you get further after getting your degree in university also gaining on your social skills that you may need for your future career. At university you will encounter so many different people in your 3/4 years of attending university and establish new friendships. Also throughout your time attending university you will attending various lectures with many other students, this give you the opportunity to meet a variety of different people.

Another pro to attending HE is being able to gain independence within yourself, to make your own choices such as living on your own away from your friends and family if you have chosen to attend university out of your town or city, making sure your work and studies are up to date as university is very different to college and school. This also means you will have to pay for your accommodation and other living expenses such as food shopping, this will help you and you will learn how to manage your finances reasonably and become more responsible. Attending university out of your town or city will help you gain a new level of maturity and independence.

As they are many advantages, they're many disadvantages of attending university/HE that needs to be taken into consideration. First things first, HE is expensive !!! money/finance is a huge factor to take into consideration. Tuition fees come up too thousands of pounds and graduates leave university/HE with an excessive amount of debt. Money for accommodation is also a problem you may come across, if you chose to attend a university away from home you would need to you would need money for the living expenses, such as accommodation and shopping, But, student loans can be taken to help pay for studies, however this may not cover all your expenses. After graduation and you before a graduate and find a job that you earn over a certain salary, you would gradually have to pay off the loan you borrowed for your 3/4 years of studying in university.

Another con to attending university/HE is the amount of work that must be kept up with and studying for exams. In university you will be responsible for your own workload and must be fully committed to your course/ program. Students are expected to dedicate their time when not in lectures to independent studying. This can be difficult to balance if you have a part time job to gain extra income while studying at university and can be very stressful for some students.

Furthermore, while taking a course you will learn plenty of theory work in your subject  but you may not get the opportunity to gain any physical experience, as many post graduates start to apply for their job roles and realise they do not have any practical experience to be considered for positions. They may have to undertakes unpaid work or an internships to gain experience and this can be hard to commit to especially if you have taken employment in another field and are no longer flexible. post completing this , graduates may still not have the experience required for the employer and can end up feeling like university was a waste of time.

Finally, during your time on your chosen course that you are studying, you may decide that the chosen field is not right for you and you have picked the wrong course and would like to change. This could potentially mean that you would have to wait till the end of the academic year to change your degree and at that point in time, you have already paid a whole year of tuition as well as living expenses. Also, you could have had a change of  heart for university as a whole and decided that uni isn't for you and therefore decide that you would like to leave. Many student come to the conclusion that they would like to undergo a different path which does not require a degree from university.

To conclude, HE/university is 100% something to deeply consider before jumping straight away because society makes out that you must go to university to get far in life, when really in truly it isn't. There are benefits to taking this path however with that comes a few burdens that have to be considered if going down this route.
